Scale of Light – Shading

Saturday, April 28, 2018
10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Buena Creek Gardens

In this 4 hour class you will briefly review the first 4 KEYS of Observational Drawing and then you will launch into a great exploration of the depth and drama of the scale of light. The scale of light is a range of value that runs from blackest black to lightest light. Artists use the full scale to express depth, movement, variety, drama and balance. You will learn how to make your pencil create smooth transitions from dark to light. This is called LOW CONTRAST. Round surfaces, like the trunk of a tree or someone’s arm exhibit gentle, peaceful transitional areas. You will also learn how to make your pencil create sudden dramatic collisions of light and dark. This is called HIGH CONTRAST. Light areas appear to come toward you (like a bright sky) while dark areas may appear to move mysterious away from you (like the shadow under a bush).
